Michelle’s new cyber career
Michelle has always been fascinated by cyber and how computer systems operate on the back end, so she decided to take advantage of the opportunity to study cyber security.
'Despite being a middle-aged woman, I still have a strong desire to push myself out of my comfort zone and am always up for a challenge,' Michelle shared.
Michelle discovered the Queensland Government Cyber Security Unit’s cyber skills accelerator program, which supports Queensland Government staff from both technical IT and non-technical backgrounds to transition to cyber security operation roles.
At the time, Michelle was working in Queensland Shared Services as a Service Delivery Officer. Her first step was to complete the 12-week IT Essentials Bridging Program to grasp some foundational IT concepts before joining the accelerator Certificate IV in Cyber Security program.
After completing both programs, Michelle reflected on her experience and shared, 'I feel I have gained valuable knowledge and skills and boosted my confidence and competence in having a better understanding all things IT. Engaging in practical exercises and collaborating with classmates in the Certificate IV from diverse backgrounds not only enriched the learning experience but also fostered lifelong friendships'.
When asked if she would recommend the course to anyone, Michelle said 'I would highly recommend the Certificate IV in Cyber Security course to anyone who wants to learn or advance in this exciting and rewarding field. The course is interesting and educational, but also encouraging and motivating. The instructors were kind, informed, and supportive. They consistently provided me with feedback, addressed my inquiries, and inspired me to never stop studying. The other students were helpful and cooperative as well'.
Michelle also shared her experiences with other students and said, 'Through online forums and chats, we exchanged experiences, knowledge, and advice. Additionally, we collaborated on a few group projects where we benefited from one another's knowledge and abilities. I had the impression that I belonged to a group of students with similar interests and objectives. The cyber skills accelerator program was a transformative experience that went beyond academic instruction'.
